Book review: Quit Church

This life-changing book, Quit Church: Because Your Life Would Be Better If You Did, by Pastor Chris Sonksen, holds power within its pages.
As I read each chapter, it encouraged and truly convicted me to “quit church.”
“Quitting church” isn’t exactly what you may think it is. Instead of physically quitting church, Sonksen vibrantly instructs how to quit making the common mistakes we as Christians and churches so often make such as:
•believing or expecting the church we attend (and fellow Christians) to have the ability to offer perfection.
•believing we’re doing the church and our church staff a favor when we help out or serve (I love the way the author describes this...wish I had read this as a young parent).
•thinking the money we make is exclusively our own and is made on our own merit and ability
•not understanding the power of intentionality.
•compromising God’s design for community by believing we have the ability to “do life” on our own or exclusively online.
•and other surprising faulty beliefs we may not have considered.
I was deeply challenged, even making several changes and commitments, as I read through this great book. I believe anyone who reads this book will do a thorough inventory of how they go about their experience with...and for...their church.
As I read through the pages, a thought continually spoke to my heart: if every church and each Christian would read and apply the principles of this book, what an incredible difference it would truly make.
I appreciate the book’s format, which includes questions at the end of each chapter. This helped me to contemplate what my next spiritual steps should be.
Ministry leaders and staff could benefit from reading this book together. It will sharpen what you already know to be true and may reveal changes God may desire for you to create within your church. One of my favorite parts of Quit Churchwas Sonksen’s description of how to create community—a rich mindset of family within a church.
As you read this book, see for yourself the many ways God wants you to “quit church.” Your life—and the church you attend—will benefit greatly.
