Wisdom from another culture

Wisdom from another culture

One of my favorite places on earth is the Pennsylvania Amish Country. The rolling green farm lands, the peaceful, soul-nourishing atmosphere and well, the Whoopie pies.

There’s a businessman we at iWork4Him met in the past year, Don Hoover, a partner of a Christian-led farm equipment company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Here’s one of his favorite sayings (and now ours too) that will challenge your thinking:

“Common sense has no place in the life of a spirit-led follower of Christ.”

What? Aren’t we Christians the most common-sense folks on the planet?

Here’s what I think he means. When we are attuned to the Holy Spirit, what He guides us to do in the moment is often contrary to what we’d think logic would tell us to do.

Business is based on logic, right? Sound judgment and solid decision making is based on common-sense, right?

We’d be well advised to remember that Christ’s actions were often, if not always “counter-cultural.”

Counter-cultural is defined as: A way of life and set of attitudes opposed to the prevailing social norm. Is there any better definition for us as Christ-followers?

And if Christ is counter-cultural, then we, as Christ-followers should be too!

We should look different, smell different, think different, act different. Do business differently. Work differently.

Consider 1 Corinthians 2:15-16:

Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to teach him? But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ”

Wehave the mind of Christ. But are we using it? Which mind are you using? The often counter-cultural mind of the Holy Spirit? Or the common sense mind of this world?
