Three spiritual truths about money I was recently reminded of
I've had a reality check about money.
The issue was that I needed to be more careful about spending it. As I worked through my circumstances and realizations with the Lord, he reminded me of three truths.
It's all on loan. In our quest to be better stewards of his money, it's good to be reminded that we don't own it. It's not ours. We didn't even get it on our own (see Deut. 8:17-18).
It reveals and builds character. How do you know if money is dominating you? Solomon says you love it if you never feel like you have enough (Ecc. 5:10).
The lack of it increases reliance on God. Most of us have been (or are currently) in a time of great need. One thing I've learned is that God provides what we need, when we need it. He's done it over and over for me and my family, increasing my trust every time.
Finally, Paul in Phillipians 4 reveals his secret to weathering times of need. His advice is simple:
Be content.
How do we actually do that?
The key is in verse 13. He says he can do it "through him who gives me strength."
He achieves contentment by remembering Christ is in him, enabling him to persevere and to trust.
We can do it, too.
Trusting in his strength,
