Author Dale Carnegie once wrote, “Our fatigue is often caused not by work, but by worry, frustration, and resentment.” One of the most critical components of worry and fear is that it saps the energy of the leader.
The time that would have been spent on vision casting, product development, team training or projects is replaced with concerns, fears, and worrying about all the possible things that could go wrong.
Jesus encourages all people, but maybe even more so leaders in His Sermon on Mount. In Matthew 6:25-34, Jesus outlines how the everlasting love of God overpowers the momentary issues of the day.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” ~Matthew 6:34
The beauty of this verse is that God understands every aspect of what might cause a leader or individual to worry. Nothing surprises God! God is not caught off guard when food or drink or that which enables a person the revenue to obtain those things seem to be shut off. God is not surprised by the changes that happen that impact the body, health, or lifestyle.
Amid these changes, Jesus is calling for his disciples to remember that life (is) more than food, and the body more than clothes. We’re called to look at the things that matter most in life. Leaders are to find meaning even while mourning. We’re to remind everyone that there is Someone who can give abundantly in times of scarcity.
God is more
In Matthew 6:26, Jesus gives a promise to any listener about the unlimited supply of God. Jesus says, “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”
In this simple reminder, Jesus points to the truth of the supply of God. Many Christians speak about understanding the sovereignty of God and rightly so, but they neglect the supply of God.
God is never in short supply. He provides what the birds need daily, so the birds never worry. They instinctively know that what they need for that day will be supplied.
Every believer should embrace the truth of the supply of God believing and acting in such a way that God will give them what they need for that day.
Here’s more of what the Bible reminds us about the abundance of God:
• 2 Corinthians 9:8 - “And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”
• Ephesians 3:20 - “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”
• Philippians 4:19 - “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.”
• Psalm 23:5 - “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
• Psalm 66:8-12 - “Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip. For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs; you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.”
God does not have a limited supply, and He can show His abundance in times of lack. This truth is a call for all believers to trust God and to turn to Him daily to give out of His abundance and to provide for the needs of the day.
Therefore it is not profitable to worry since it won't add anything to your life. Instead, a more productive way is to “Seek first [God’s] kingdom and His righteousness, and all of these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).
