The difficulty in finding your purpose
Everyone was born for a purpose. That’s right, even you. You are here for a reason.
There’s something special about you. And you must find out what makes you, you. You’ll find people out there who will tell you the path to purpose is easy. By following three simple steps, you can know your purpose and begin living it out.
I’ve found this to be a bunch of bunk. I’m pretty sure you have too. Finding your purpose isn’t easy. In reality, this will be one of the hardest things you’ll do.
Forces will come against you. You’ll tell yourself you’re not worth it. You’ll hear others tell you that you’re silly for pursuing what you believe in. You’ll feel crazy because your purpose may seem so far out there.
The journey to your purpose isn’t easy. You’ll face a lot of trials. But you can take action and move towards finding your purpose.
During my search for purpose, I’ve found a few things have helped me. I believe these action steps can help you as well.
Surround yourself with good people
Recently, I met with a great group of people. Some I’d met before, others I’d only interacted with online.
Bobby, Lisa, Rick, Julie, and my wife…
Talk about an amazing group of people. These men and women are dreamers and builders. They are ready to see something great happen.
And they’re pursuing it. Through writing. Through community. Through faith.
Just being around these people made me feel more alive and ready to find my purpose than I can remember in a long time.
Finding a group of people who can challenge you to be better will do more for your direction than almost anything else I can think of.
Challenge yourself
I like to push the boundaries of life. Whether it’s risking my life trying to climb a frozen waterfall or seeing how far I can get to the edge, I like to be challenged.
Through challenging myself, I’ve come to realize I can go further than I ever imagined. This helps in discovering purpose because you realize you don’t have to stay where you are.
Think of Moses in the Bible. Through his challenge of poor speech, he learned to challenge a pharaoh and lead a massive exodus from Egypt.
He was challenged. What about you?
Look for what breaks your heart
At a Catalyst conference in Atlanta, Andy Stanley shared a powerful way to find your purpose. He put it into five words.
Find what breaks your heart.
These five words hold a lot of power when you’re looking for your passion. And it’s the easiest, hardest way to find it.
When you begin looking for what breaks your heart, you can easily stumble onto your passion. However, it will also cause you lots of pain.
You’ll enter into a world where your heart is constantly broken, yet simultaneously renewed.
