If you're in any position of leadership today, you are likely feeling pressure to use the latest AI technology.
So, as believers, should we use it, or resist it?
I've started using ChatGPT to edit my devotions or brainstorm titles. It's caught typos and made general improvements. But I don't use it to write the devotion itself.
Many pastors use text-based AI to enhance their own writing of sermons, articles and emails. Nothing wrong with that.
My company uses it to aid in content production and editing, and we're investigating ways to use it more.
Literally every day, I read about creative uses for the technology.
But we should also resist it. I believe the end goal of AI-generated content, like all other idols, is to replace God. In this case, it seeks to replace God's knowledge and wisdom, and therefore any need for him.
As with all new technologies, AI can be used for good. But we are wise to remember Jesus' statement in Mt. 24:35 – "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away."
ChatGPT can be helpful. But its words are artificial and fleeting.
I'm reminded of the warning in Prov. 10:19 that "sin is not ended by multiplying words." And the last half of Ecc. 5:3, which says, "many words mark the speech of a fool."
Enough said.
Resisting with you,
Tom Harper
