Leadership lessons simplified: Whatever he says, do it

Leadership lessons simplified: Whatever he says, do itiStock

"Fill the jars with water," Jesus told them. So they filled them to the brim. Then he said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the headwaiter." And they did.

~John 2:7, 8, CSB

Jesus' mother Mary told the servants, "Do whatever he tells you," (verse 5). Things change for the better when we know and do what Jesus says.

Out of a simple instruction and an obedient response, transformation occurred. Water became wine, fine wine (verse 10).

We experience transformation when we know what Jesus says and turn that knowledge into obedient activity. This is the pathway of wisdom and power.

Knowing what Jesus says is good. We read his words in the Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. We give attention to his words in Bible studies in groups both large and small.

We enrich our understanding when we commit his words to memory. Nothing much changes, however, until we do what he says.

The servants heard Jesus say, "Fill the jars with water," (verse 7). They did. Then he said, "Now draw some out and take it to the headwaiter." (verse 8). And they did.

The instructions were simple. Obedience was easy. The effects were miraculous.

Sometimes we make following Jesus harder than it has to be.

  1. Listen to his instructions.
  2. Do what he says.
  3. Live a transformed life.

Our Father, give me ears to hear what you say. Give me a willing and obedient heart to do what you say. I will trust you for transformational results. Amen.
