How to increase your energy

"David returned home to bless his family" (1 Chr 16:43).

King David was spent. He had just come off a major leadership initiative that involved worship, singing, and staff reorganization. He had moved the holy ark of God to Jerusalem, its rightful home. Now it was time to go home himself and "bless his family."

Have you ever completed a huge undertaking or a major project and felt completely spent? Or maybe a heavy travel schedule kept you away from home, and you were ready to crash. This is a regular rhythm for me. Whether it's a writing project, speaking at conferences, or prepping to teach, I'm used to the build-up, explosion of energy, and post-partem blues.

Partly out of necessity, I have learned to regroup after spending myself. But I've also learned—more importantly—to regulate my energy during the surges so I have something left for family.

There's nothing worse than work getting the best of us, leaving us a worn-out shell for the people at home. They should be getting our best!

David, arguably the greatest king to walk the earth, knew how to peacefully ramp down after conquering enemies, establishing a country and communing with God.

A great leadership example to follow.
