How to build influence as a servant leader

"Drop what you're doing, right now, and follow me!"

This was what Jesus asked Simon and Andrew to do in Matthew 4. These fisherman were simply putting in a hard day's work when Jesus asked them to take a step that would change their lives forever.

What compelled them to go with him? Was it his commanding presence in that moment? No. This wasn't the first time that they had met Jesus. Though his ministry was just beginning, these fisherman already knew and trusted him.

Jesus had built so much trust among these men that they were willing to walk away from their current lives to follow him.

The lesson for us today is that trust is earned through the way we care, lead by example, and push toward the mission.

Jesus didn't wait for a position of authority before he started leading. He led right where he was, in every situation.

Early in Luke's Gospel, we learn that at the age of twelve, he taught in the temple. He had a mission, a vision, and a desire to see lives changed, and he wasn't going to waste a single moment.

Many times in my life I've felt I didn't have the ability to lead or gain the trust of others because I didn't hold positional authority. In reality, trust is earned through the way we care, lead by example, and push toward the mission. It isn't earned because of the position we hold, but by how we live day to day.

Leaders exist at all levels and in all environments. We do not need a position to care for others, help them grow, or push them to achieve. What gives you the authority to lead someone else is whether or not they trust you. Trust is earned.

So how do you earn the trust of others? Start by being an example right now.

When people see something different in the way you live, speak, or work, it can inspire them take action and be involved. In this way you're leading them because of your actions, not your words. Be what you want to see in the environment you're in.

If you're struggling to build the trust of others, ask yourself what example you've already set. How have you lived a life of care, integrity, and trust up to this point?

Once you know what kind of example you've been, change something! Trust and leadership are earned through your actions, your heart, and your sense of duty.

Simon and Andrew trusted Jesus and were willing to follow him anywhere. When people trust you, they will follow you into the unknown. Be the leader others trust and want to follow.

Start by being the leader youwould want to follow.
