How might God be trying to grow you?

I recently read a short book called How Does Sanctification Work? (David Powlison, Crossway, 2017). I've pondered this topic for many years, especially as it relates to the life of a leader.

The book addresses progressive sanctification, which is defined as God working throughout our lives to make us into the likeness of Jesus. In this sense, we are "working out" our salvation (Phil. 2:12) as he changes us, and as we obey him.

Powlison writes, "To be sanctified is to have your faith simplified, clarified, and deepened" (p. 14). As we mature in faith, love and wisdom, the fruits of the Spirit become more prominent in our everyday life. We are being made holy (Heb. 10:14).

Powlison says growth in grace is intensely personal. There is no formula. Your journey to look like Jesus will look entirely different from anyone else's. Many factors contribute to it such as God's direct hand, Scripture, other people, suffering, troubles, our own sin, and life circumstances.

As I look back on my life, being in leadership roles has humbled me. Marriage has refined me. Parenting has stretched me. Serving in the church has grown my faith. Suffering and grief have intensified my intimacy with the Lord.

What has done it for you? Can you look at the younger you and see marked spiritual growth in the older you?

In what area of weakness or need might God be trying to grow you right now?

Where can you invite him to change you?

Still maturing,
