Faith when no one is looking
The Lord is looking for people of genuine faith—men and women who have a faith that is clear-to-the-bone and authentic. These people naturally attract others by their lifestyle. They also attract the presence of someone supremely important — God.
“Oh, Lord, who may abide in thy tent and who may dwell on thy holy hill? He who walks with integrity, works righteousness and speaks truth in his heart?” (Psalm 15:1-2).
What kind of people are in God’s presence? Notice this Scripture tells us both visible and invisible attributes of the type of people who live in the presence of God; those with “integrity,” “working righteousness” and “speaking truth in their hearts.” These attributes are powerful clues to help us identify a person with genuine faith, a person who represents God well.
These people live a consistent lifestyle, where what they believe on the inside and what they do on the outside match. As we develop an everyday faith, let’s look at how to build a faith on the inside that gives us stability on the inside. Let’s become known as people who have faith, even when no one is looking.
Through God’s Word, I’ve pulled three principles that seem evident in the lives of people that have a faith when no one is looking.
1.Set your mind on things above!
“Set your mind on things above, not on things that are on the earth” (Colossians 3:2).
We must set our minds on what we need to think about and that is on God’s things and not things of this earth. Follow the Spirit of God! He will guide and develop your mind and your heart.
The great King David wrote, “My heart is fixed, O God, my heart is fixed” (Psalm 57:7).
There is a power when you set your mind and fix your heart upon God.
2. Renew your mind often!
Renewing your mind simply means bringing it back to God. And bringing it back doesn’t necessarily mean you were off; it means you want to stay on track. It’s simply recalibrating to the exact coordinates of your flight pattern, so that you don’t go off. So don’t feel bad about getting “off;” you’re just making sure you’re staying on!
God says, “I’m going to transform you into a new person.” How will He do that?
“Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do” (Rom. 12:2).
God transforms you by changing the way you think. But that newness only takes place if you’re willing to change. If you don’t change the way you think, you can change on the outside, but on the inside, you will still be vulnerable, susceptible and even hungry for temptation.
God wants to transform us, but too many times, we choose to be influenced by the world. Don’t do it! Conforming to the world is the worst way; rather, be transformed according to God’s good purposes.
“Do not be conformed to the pattern of the world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind so that you’ll know what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:2).
When your thoughts begin to drift, God says, “Capture them! Make sure you monitor them and keep them submitted to the things of God.”
We have to keep our minds sharp, capturing every thought before we get taken.
3. Invest wisely in how you think!
“For as he thinks within himself, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7).
You are the sum total of your thoughts. Therefore, we must invest wisely in what we think because that’s who we will become!
Your mind will either become creative or destructive, depending on what you feed it. If you feed it bad questions from the inside, it’s going to think poorly. On the other hand, if you fill your mind with good questions. You can redirect your thoughts so that you think right and then you’ll act right. You’ll be able to redeem a bad situation for the better, with the Holy Spirit’s direction.
When no one is looking
Who you are when no one is looking is who you really are. The faith that you have in private and what you think about is really what is in your heart. That is where you are building a reservoir of good treasure or bad treasure.
And, surprisingly, it’s what people will see when they are looking. Become a person who lives an everyday faith that remains true through and through. That comes through setting your mind on God, renewing your mindset often and investing wisely into what you’re storing in your brain. It will make a difference in your own destiny and in the lives of others around you. And, it’ll make a world of difference in a world that needs a difference.
