Book review: Inner Threat, by Tom Harper

David Bowman

Tom Harper is a talented man and a premier business leader. He manages a website and newsletter for Christian leaders and is both a publisher and an author. His superior abilities in each of these realms is exemplary. Those with weaker-than-average self-confidence would be forgiven for finding him a threat. Everyone else will discover a master of many hats handsomely worn. His speech is calm and confident. His manner is pleasant and forthright.

Harper's latest novel, Inner Threat: Combatting Christian Leadership's Natural Enemy, is a true gift for leaders. He helps us see problems through the eyes and experiences of others. We see what they do right, what they do wrong, where they lack clarity, and what is missing.

This novel stimulates a desire for more pages and more action for all the right reasons. I recently completed another tome of over 800 wearying pages. Despite the book's many accolades, I couldn't help wishing for a manuscript briefer by half. Harper weaves a story a reader would enjoy if it were twice as long. Inner Threat was consumed in one flight from the Pacific Northwest back home to Texas.

This book will help you identify and address those little things that have a way of becoming bigger things and sometimes even disastrous things. Wouldn't it be nice if more books followed such a formula?

This is a good book for a group of leaders to read and discuss together. Accountability relationships could be established and problems solved before they begin. Each group member could help the others become a leader who does the right thing first time and every time.
