Book Review: High-Impact Teams

Instead of allowing our mistakes and missteps to be our best lessons, the wise leader seeks the advice of those who have gone before, attempting to not replicate the mistakes of the past. Lance Witt provides the reader with tremendous insight into church and Christian ministry leadership.
A former pastor working in the megachurch environment, Witt shares his successes and failures. He casts a framework for team leadership that provides a way to get things accomplished while also addressing the deeper concerns of the relational, emotional, and spiritual health of team members.
Structured to provide engaging group discussion, this book provides questions after each short chapter, helping the team to engage in the core concepts. The book explores multiple aspects of team leadership, giving ample attention to application.
This book is a great resource for group leadership development, and is broken into eight parts:
- Own It!
- Bring Your Best Your
- Define the Win
- Get 'Er Done
- Prioritize Relationship
- Defuse Land Mines
- Craft the Culture
- Moving Forward
In today's environment, the section on Defusing Land Mines is essential reading. Witt covers multiple areas that leaders must be ready to face. I found this section a perfect fit for our world today.
What I enjoyed most about this read is that Witt emphasizes the need for the leader to be healthy. He challenges many practices that currently dominate the landscape of church leadership, providing alternatives to the dangerous practices that wear people out.
Witt provides some compelling anecdotes of learning lessons the hard way, and finding innovative paths forward.
Witt is a compelling voice calling Christian leaders to examine personal motivations and practices. The subtitle of this book aptly captures the essence of what I took away from this book—Where Healthy Meets High Performance. I highly recommend this read to anyone who wants to lead a team more effectively.
