Book review: Extreme Ownership

Kim Niles

Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win (co-authored by Navy SEALs Leif Babin and Jocko Willink) serves as a useful guide for leaders who aspire to build, train and lead high-performance winning teams. It is also a highly effective book for anyone who aspires to better themselves personally.

Babin and Willink did a fantastic job co-writing Extreme Ownership and explaining each of their high-performance principles. Their principles don’t merely apply to businesses or organizations; they also apply to self, marriage, family dynamics, parenting, church—any individual, group, relationship, corporation or life scenario.

I was particularly impressed with how the authors clearly explained their leadership principles and success. Each chapter is packed with war stories about how Babin and Willink gained valuable insight into hard-fought lessons of winning, leadership and learning highly applicable life lessons.

The authors challenge and guide their readers through learning these important principles and lessons and how to reject mediocrity. They encourage their readers to train and prepare to achieve extraordinary results. They have a unique formula for success and carefully outline this formula at the end of each chapter. Very practical!

Leaders will have the opportunity to learn how to persevere through tough times, how to effectively work through failure, and how to create efficiency, profitability and productivity in all areas of business and life.

Babin and Willink created a company, Echelon Front, where they help other businesses and organizations grow and profit. Readers who own a company or lead a team will especially benefit from reading Extreme Ownership.

Through all they learned, they not only founded a company that serves many major corporations, they also built, created and ran SEAL leadership training, as well as a curriculum, for the next generation of SEAL leaders. I admire Babin and Willink’s dedication to the men they served with, as well as those who are trained under their leadership.

Whether you are a natural born leader, or you desire to perfect the craft of leadership, Extreme Ownershipprovides ultimate guidance. Anyone can apply the principles and lessons in this marvelous book and truly master them to become effective, highly skilled leaders.
