1. Tell us a little about yourself.
My wife and I recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary (and have been going steady for 45 years). We have two grown children and are eagerly waiting for that first grandchild. We are currently connected to two church fellowships and several smaller church groups. I am an avid reader (Tolkien and Tozer are my favorites) and road cyclist (as the weather allows).
2. Describe what kind of work you do, and what you've done in the past.
In 2006, we founded inLight Consulting to encourage, edify, and equip workplace leaders in their callings as disciple makers and transformation agents. We help leaders at all levels, and in all professions, discover the desire of their heart for ministry and subsequently walk into the resulting adventure God has created specifically for each of them. The Lord has also graciously used me as His pen to write several books (The Map Maker, A Storm is Coming, and An Enemy Lies Within). Prior to full-time ministry, I worked in IT for 25 years, apprenticing into the industry as a programmer analyst in 1980 and retiring as an enterprise architect in 2005.
3. What was your first-ever leadership role?
My first leadership opportunity in the corporate world came sometime in the mid-1980s, when I was given responsibility for a small team of system programmers. Several years later, I received my first leadership assignment in the church as the lay leader of a local church fellowship.
4. How has God grown you as a leader over the years?
God has been long-suffering and persistent in His attention to my growth as a leader, working in me to will and to do to His good pleasure. I sure wish I had been more compliant early on. He has used both corporate and church environments to uproot pride and increase my faith, on several occasions. The Holy Spirit has been my transformer, renewing my mind as I have learned to reckon God's reality as my own. Continually encouraging me to disown myself, Jesus Christ has become my life. It has all been by the Father's grace, through His Son's faith, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
5. What's the hardest leadership lesson you've ever learned?
I spent many years of my Christian walk subconsciously assuming God wanted every part of my life except for my career (after all, I worked for a bank). Eventually, my controlling nature led to a level of pride that God would no longer tolerate. The uprooting was incredibly painful and liberating (the first of many). I am still amazed at how ignorant I was of the arrogance I perpetrated on others. It is incredible how blind we can be to the sin in our life. The big lesson: God wants every part of your life, and He will not favor you in the areas you hold for yourself.
6. What advice would you give to Christian leaders?
God has positioned every Christian leader, regardless of profession or position, with authority and purpose for His kingdom. Joyful, Spirit-filled ministry begins by discovering the desire God has put in your heart for the workplace in which you have been positioned. Do not resist or attempt to work around the transformation required to prepare you for the good work He has created specifically for you. Find your platoon and bring them along; there are no Lone Rangers in the kingdom of God. Last (and definitely not least), find the person God has prepared to disciple you and ask them to take on that responsibility.
7. Most meaningful Scripture:
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). The command here is not "do good works," but "let your light shine." The life of Jesus Christ is our light (John 1:4). The "good works" are not ours (or people would be glorifying us). Good works are God's works, works created for us to walk in (Ephesians 2:10). As we are transformed, people see the image of the glory of the Lord (2 Corinthians 3:18), and they proclaim, "Isn't God awesome!"
