Tell us a little about you personally (family, church, hobbies).

I've been married to Martha over 34 years, and we've been best friends for 38 years. We have three married children and six grandchildren. Our kids are all over the country and praise God, all walking with Jesus. Martha and I live in Ft. Myers, Fl. near her folks, who we help out now and then. My folks live in Tucson, Ariz. because of the dry heat. We go to a small church and lead a small group study. Our hobby is marriage mentoring, which we've been doing for 20 years. We hold an annual marriage retreat for those we've mentored. We love to do home projects and love to serve our neighbors. Sometimes that's the only exercise I get!

Describe what kind of work you do, and what you've done in the past.

With a 30-year background in personal and commercial insurance and experience in small-business computer hardware, I have always been in sales. For the last 7 ½ years, we have hosted a ministry (iWork4Him.com) focused on unlocking God's purpose for Christians in their work. We have a daily radio program in two styles – 20 minutes long and 1 minute long. Our goal is to change the mindset of all 55 million Christians at work, helping them to recognize that the workplace is their primary ministry and mission field. We plan on using the remaining years of our lives to build collaboration and cooperation within the body of Christ so the world will see the difference Jesus makes in us.

What was your first-ever leadership role?

I was a 15-year-old sophomore when I volunteered to be a student leader with Youth for Christ at my high school in Burnsville, MN. Along with three older students, we were excited to make disciples in the school, but our leader disappeared, never to be heard from again. I was pushed into leadership of the team. I saw many lives impacted during that time—I know mine was. Because my faith was on display at school, I tried to stay out of trouble.

How has God grown you as a leader over the years?

When I first started leading in the marketplace, I was told that business is business and church is church, and they have nothing to do with each other. I thought the goal was to make a lot of money and give it to the church, and maybe serve on a committee. This caused me to live two lives—one at work and one outside work. God changed all that when I turned 40, as I was finally discipled. I learned that everything about me had everything to do with Jesus. When my faith impacted my work, I was forced to make a ton of phone calls asking for forgiveness for past behaviors. Learning to seek forgiveness and being quick to offer it to others has shaped my life today.

What's the hardest leadership lesson you've ever learned?

That I don't know everything, and I can't do everything. I have had to learn to lean on the Lord with impossible problems, and ask Him for solutions. I've had to learn that my first hour of the day is His and when I skip that hour, I miss the best hour of the day.

What advice would you give to Christian leaders?

As organizational leaders, we control the culture, and are considered the lead minister. Everything about you should reflect the radical life change brought on by Jesus. Memorize Romans 12:2:

Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.
—Rom. 12:2, NLT

While you're asking "What would Jesus do," also ask Him, "Where am I copying the behavior and customs of this world?" When we as believers live a radically transformed life, our people will be blessed and they will bless your customers, vendors and the community.

Most meaningful Scripture:

I love Phil. 4:11-13. Until I learned to be content, my life was a mess. If Paul had to learn to be content, I definitely needed to learn too.

Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. 13 For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.
— Phil. 4:11-13 (NLT)
