Biblical Leadership writer profile: Bud Brown

1. Tell us a little about you personally

My wife and I met at the University of Minnesota and relocated to the Southwest in 1971. We recently celebrated our 50th anniversary with our four adult children and their families and five of our seven grandchildren.

Hobbies include sailing, scuba diving, reading, competitive weight lifting, landscape photography, and travel.

2. Describe what kind of work you do, and what you've done in the past.

I've had a wide range of experience as a settled pastor, from the solo pastor of a small church to a staff member of one of the fastest growing churches in America and everything in between.

I've been a church consultant, a mentor for younger pastors, a trainer, an intentional interim pastor, and interventionist for the past 20 years.

3. What was your first-ever leadership role?

Running a construction crew building new houses in Dallas, TX.

4. How has God grown you as a leader over the years?

He's put me in a lot of tough spots over the years where I've had no choice but to depend on him to pay the bills and feed my family. Those experiences taught me how to empathize with others without pitying them. Decades of experience in troubled churches or working with troubled pastors have loaned me a dose of wisdom and insight that others seem to appreciate. I've also learned patience with people and processes. He's also shaped my mind so that I'm able to see and understand all the details while at the same time seeing the "big picture" without getting lost in the details.

5. Hardest leadership lesson?

Sometimes you have to discipline the people you love, and sometimes the people you love will turn against you.

6. What advice to Christian leaders?

Deepen and broaden your understanding of the mission of God and what constitutes a disciple of Jesus.

7. Most meaningful scripture?

Romans 5:1-11 (NIV)

Faith Brings Joy
1 Therefore, since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace[a] with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. 2 Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's glory.

3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

6 When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. 7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. 9 And since we have been made right in God's sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God's condemnation. 10 For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. 11 So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God.
