6 questions to ask as you lead change

As you lead a change initiative here are six things to ponder:

1. Why do you want to lead this change? Are you leading this change just for your own sake, because you think things will be better? Or are you leading this change for the sake of God's Kingdom, with a desire to see God's name being glorified?

2. Who are the people you are leading through this change? Are they just names and faces in your workplace, or nameless people labeled as "customers," or other businesses labelled as "suppliers"? Or are they men and women created by God, loved by God, each of whom has a name, and unique personality created by God?

3. Who are you that you want to lead this change? Are you a leader or manager in your organization? Or are you a child of God, God's servant, a man or woman of faith who trusts in God, and who wants to walk in obedience with God?

4. Where will God find you? Will God find you standing in pride with your chest puffed out because somebody is paying you the big bucks to lead this effort? Or will God find you kneeling at the foot of the cross, crying out for wisdom, interceding on behalf of the people you lead?

5. What do you have in your hands? Do you hold your opinions? Do you hold the opinions of others? Do you hold the best tools and skills on change? Or do you hold these in one hand, and hold the Bible in your other hand?

6. Are you leading this change on your own strength? Or are you expecting God to demonstrate his gracious power? Are you expecting God to reveal his love, his glory, his grace? Are you expecting God through the power of the Holy Spirit to change lives?

God trusted Adam and Eve with the awesome responsibility of being change agents of his creation. One would have thought this blessing by God would be sufficient, but it wasn't.

Adam and Eve felt like they needed more than God's wisdom to make good choices to fill the earth and have dominion over it.

They thought they needed to know for themselves good from evil, so that they could judge what was good and what was bad, rather than relying on the all-knowing, ever-present Creator's wisdom.

Ever since, with every change we are involved in, we have the choice to act as gods, the choice to try to make changes based on what we individually think is good or bad, or what somebody else thinks is good or bad.

But wait. God knew we would choose to rely on their own wisdom, would choose to want to define what is good, and what is bad for ourselves. Yet God chose us to be change agents in his creation.

If God could entrust this role to us, knowing that we would snub our noses at him, why are we not willing to trust God?

As a person leading change, how will you lead knowing that God has chosen you, God loves you, God is with you and God will never leave you or forsake you?
